The issue of the 500 and 1,000 naira notes being legal tender or not, once again, came to the fore on Sunday with Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state decrying what he described as the maltreatment of residents of the state by commercial banks that had refused to accept the old naira notes despite making such available to customers.
In a statement issued on Sunday and obtained by Pulsenews his Spokesman, Mr Olawale Rasheed, the governor lamented the concomitant pains and sufferings , noting that he had been inundated with complaints as people had accused the commercial banks of refusing to accept old naira notes which has had negative consequences on the populace.
The statement noted that Governor Ademola Adeleke ‘has received several calls from people across the state’ adding that the deliberate refusal of commercial banks to accept old naira notes ‘is creating serious economic complications for residents of the state’.
The governor also submitted that commercial banks issuing old naira notes and refusing to accept old naira notes as deposits ‘is highly unacceptable’.
Governor Adeleke has consequently called on the Central Bank of Nigeria to direct the commercial banks operating in the state to correct these anomalies.
‘The state director of the CBN is specifically requested to direct the commercial banks to halt this unhealthy practice.
If the commercial banks will not accept old naira notes as deposits, they must stop issuing old naira notes for withdrawals. The current pain being inflicted on our people must stop’ the statement submitted.
