The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday said that operatives of the Directorate of State Security who arrested the former Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe, acted in error.

The commission said that the operatives acted on a watch-list which was sent out since 2016 on which Okupe’s name was.

Wislon Uwujiaren, EFCC spokesman, said that the security intelligence agency informed the commission its men had intercepted Okupe at the airport.
The statement by EFCC, titled “Interception of Doyin Okupe” read “The Department of State Services, DSS, today, January 12, informed the Commission of the interception of Dr. Doyin Okupe, former presidential adviser, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
“The Service acted on a Watch-list request issued on July 18, 2016, over six years before his recent conviction on money laundering charges by the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

The commission added that it was in the process of formally lifting the watch-list before his interception and will expedite action in this regard.
Okupe was picked by men of the DSS and was promptly transferred to the office of the EFCC.
However, few hours later, Okupe came out to say that he was arrested in error.
He did not say what the “error” was.
He wrote “ I was arrested and detained @ the MMIA, Lagos this morning, 12th Jan on my way to UK for medicals; years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC Abuja.
I just left the EFCC office where Snr Officers in Lagos & Abuja apologised to me for the error.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZZARD abi?”
