The Senator representing the Oyo South Senatorial district, Senator Kola Balogun, has lost his two attempts to clinch the ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC) after decamping to the party for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The APC in Oyo State had earlier organised a primary election to determine its Oyo South Senatorial candidate on Saturday but cancelled the process as a result of overvoting.
The cancelled election saw the emergence of Kolapo Idris Kola-Daisi, a son-in-law to the late governor of Oyo State Abiola Ajimobi, as the APC Oyo South senatorial candidate.
He was followed by Sharafdeen Alli who polled 107 votes, Bimbo Adekanbi who polled 98 votes and Senator Kola Balogun who had 93 votes.
However, upon the cancellation of the election due to overvoting, the party organised a re-run election which was held on Tuesday afternoon at an event centre around Oyo state Housing corporation area in Bodija Ibadan.
In the new election, Sharafadeen Alli, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) emerged as the winner, coming up from his previous second position.
He polled a total of 185 votes to defeat other aspirants including the incumbent Senator Kola Balogun.
Kolapo Idris Kola-Daisi who was initially the winner came second with 145 votes, Senator Balogun came up from fourth to third by polling a total of 84 votes.
Othe candidates including Bimbo Adekanbi and Kareem Ayo polled 72 and 1 votes respectively.
Sharafadeen Alli was thereafter declared the winner of the election and announced as the APC flagbearer for the Oyo South Senatorial district in 2023.
The Oyo State APC has concluded its primary election for the Oyo North and Oyo Central Senatorial districts with incumbent Senator Abdulfatai Buhari and Dr Yunus Akintunde emerging as the candidates respectively.
