President Muhammadu Buhari has on Friday signed the Electoral Bill into law.
His media aide, Femi Adesina, had earlier indicated that baring all unforeseen circumstances, the president was expected to append his signature to the document on Friday.
The electoral bill had become a thorny issue nationwide with various organization staging protests to have it signed.
Just last Monday, some civil society groups stormed the Unity Fountain in Abuja to protest the delay in the signing of the bill.
They had argued that only the signing of the law could guarantee the credibility of the country’s elections.
President Buhari, who initially rejected the bill said some of the provisions were anti-democratic.
The lower chamber of the National Assembly thereafter amended the bill further to take care some of the observations raised by the President.
Prominent among the provisions of the new will be electronic transmission of results during elections.
The political parties are also now free to elect their candidates either through direct primaries, indirect primaries and consensus.
